DEST9
Module 9: Design Improvement (Core)
Outcome
Analyze the design process in a design improvement scenario.
Indicators
(a) Examine existing products (e.g., a pencil, a pen, a backpack) or procedures (e.g., the process of moving from classroom to classroom for various classes, the process for borrowing library books) and critically evaluate their form, function(s) and limitations, including universal design considerations.
(b) Hypothesize why decisions regarding form and function were made in the original design process.
(c) Determine what problems or opportunities for modification exist to improve or broaden the application of products or procedures to achieve a desired outcome.
(d) Identify modifications to improve a current design.
(e) Review a variety of methods to gather data regarding the needs and requirements of a client (e.g., survey customers/stakeholders, explore marketplace for current solutions and trends) for a design improvement.
(f) Summarize how each step of the design process is engaged in the improvement of a product or procedure.
(g) Design and test a product improvement plan using current manufacturing processes.
