Module 11: Aesthetics and Function in Design (Core)
Outcome
Investigate the relationship between aesthetics and function in design.
Indicators
(a) | Define aesthetics (i.e., that which is considered beautiful or tasteful), form (i.e., an object’s shape, size and material from which it is made), and function (i.e., the purpose of an object or what it helps people do) as they relate to design. |
(b) | Identify the relationship between function and aesthetics, and function and form. |
(c) | Assess the aesthetic choices used to convey the intended functionality of a variety of products. |
(d) | Explore the impacts of aesthetics and function on the human psyche. |
(e) | Explore alternative materials and processes that might be used in creating a product. |
(f) | Identify a variety of products that share a function but use a variety of aesthetic choices, such as colour, shape, size and surface texture. |
(g) | Describe how the aesthetic choices of form can detract from or enhance the functionality of a variety of products (e.g., a convertible rooftop on a car may look attractive but is not functional to heat the interior of the car in cold temperatures). |
(h) | Explore how form impacts the way we interact with a product, leading to preference of one product over another (e.g., clothing, washroom fixtures). |
(i) | Speculate how differing cultural contexts can change the way that certain aesthetic features are perceived (e.g., clothing, universal design norms). |
