Outcome
Critique proposed design solutions to improve overall design.
Indicators
(a) Create norms for assessing work and providing feedback in a respectful and professional manner.
(b) Identify potential sources of critique for improvement, emphasizing the importance of communication with the end user or client as essential to the work of professional designers.
(c) Examine methods of critique for both individual and collaborative design processes.
(d) Identify criteria for desired characteristics or results for a product or process.
(e) Differentiate between constructive and nonconstructive criticism.
(f) Critique design solutions using a process that includes the following stages:
  • Describe: What do you see (e.g., colour, shape, form)?
  • Analyze: What did the producer intend?
  • Interpret: Is the product successful in conveying the message or achieving its purpose? Is the product successful using elements and principles of visual design? and,
  • Evaluate: What changes would I suggest? What factors need to be considered in assessing the feasibility of the potential changes?
(g) Offer and accept feedback, constructively and effectively, to improve a design.
(h) Write a critique of a design with an explanation of how to improve the quality of the final product.
(i) Assess how gathering feedback on models and prototypes and the process of critique and reflection helps improve an overall design.
