Module 21: First Nations and Métis Ways of Knowing in Design (Core)
Outcome
Analyze how elements of First Nations and Métis ways of knowing influence design decisions.
Indicators
(a) Explore how design reflects First Nations and Métis tradition and history in Canada.
(b) Investigate the influence of First Nations and Métis traditions, histories and ways of knowing on various types of design (e.g., environ-mental design, graphic design, interior design).
(c) Analyze how various types of design are influenced by elements of First Nations and Métis ways of knowing, including:
  • the four directions (north, south, east, west);
  • traditional colours;
  • designing to include the natural environment;
  • using natural patterns such as solar movement to increase efficiency;
  • the role and expression of spirituality and connection between heavens and earth in design;
  • use of rock as a building material to ground to the earth; and,
  • the significance of clockwise movement in the design of space.
(d) Explore the idea of architectural design as blending in or highlight the natural world instead of acting as a monument on top of it.
(e) Assess how First Nation architects and landscape designers use shape and space to reflect traditional ways of knowing.
(f) Explore the importance of gender balance when designing space.
(g) Examine the importance of green space as a healing space.
