Outcome
Investigate the role of industrial design in meeting human needs.
Indicators
(a) Define the term industrial design.
(b) Differentiate between industrial design and design of machines and systems for heavy industry.
(c) Explain the following concepts associated with industrial design:
  • innovation vs. continuous improvement;
  • brand differentiation vs. product differentiation;
  • functionality;
  • aesthetics;
  • integrity;
  • ethics;
  • durability; and,
  • the safety of products.
(d) Describe the importance of industrial design in meeting aesthetic needs, including:
  • visual product differentiation;
  • pride of ownership, image and style; and,
  • aesthetic appeal as motivator for a design team.
(e) Assess the quality of industrial design of a given product, according to:
  • usability;
  • emotional appeal;
  • ability to maintain and repair;
  • efficient use of resources; and,
  • product differentiation.
(f) Identify an improvement to the industrial design of a given product.
(g) Produce a design solution that addresses an improvement to a given product.
