DEST30
Module 30: Cost Analysis in Industrial Design (Optional)
Outcome
Assess the importance of estimating costs when developing an industrial design proposal.
Indicators
(a) Define the following terms as they relate to the design industry:
  • fixed costs;
  • direct costs;
  • indirect costs; and,
  • material costs.
(b) Investigate how the costs of materials will affect the design of a product and how altering material choice will affect the overall cost.
(c) Analyze the relationship between quality and the cost of materials.
(d) Describe how a variety of manufacturing systems affects the cost of product development.
(e) Explore how project flow and manufacturing systems impact the overall cost of production.
(f) Predict how the difference between small scale and large-scale manufacturing systems can affect the overall unit cost of a product.
(g) Research a variety of methods of determining the cost of time and systems used in creating a project.
(h) Explore methods for calculating a total project material and process costs and determining the price for the project.
(i) Explain how development costs are recouped over a period of production for a variety of products.
(j) Summarize the significance of accurate cost estimation to the industrial design proposal process.
