DEST32
Module 32: Materials Exploration (Core)
Outcome
Explore the design relationship between available materials for production and the form of finished products.
Indicators
(a) Outline factors influencing selection of materials for production of goods (e.g., time for procurement, cost, suitability for the intended function, scale of production, appearance).
(b) Describe how the selection of materials is influenced by the intended purpose of each of the following:
  • a prototype;
  • a model;
  • a single, one-of-a-kind item; and,
  • an item to be mass produced.
(c) Investigate the availability of various materials to be considered in fabrication of a select finished product.
(d) Explain how the usage requirements of a finished product influence material selection.
(e) Demonstrate how various design aesthetics, such as colour, finish and durability influence choice of materials selected for production of an object.
(f) Examine how a variety of manufacturing processes affect material choices.
(g) Research how composites, alloys and synthetic materials are developed to solve a variety of challenges in manufacturing and design.
