Create a three-dimensional design using the design process.

Indicators for this outcome
(a) Review functionality, aesthetics, elegance, timelessness and simplicity as elements of design.
(b) Research the developmental history of an existing simple product (i.e., no moving parts), focusing on design elements of elegance, timelessness, functionality and simplicity.
(c) Identify the need for a new three-dimensional product.
(d) Produce digital or free-hand images illustrating the purpose of a new three-dimensional product.
(e) Identify potential materials and connectors for the three-dimensional product.
(f) Create a simple prototype of the three-dimensional product.
(g) Document the product development process, including:
  • consideration of design elements (i.e., elegance, timelessness,
  • simplicity);
  • conflicting considerations such as balancing aesthetics and
  • functionality; and,
  • challenges best addressed via collaboration and critique.
(h) Test the prototype collaboratively to solicit feedback from other design students and potential users of the product, with particular focus upon:
  • functionality;
  • aesthetics;
  • elegance;
  • timelessness; and,
  • simplicity.
(i) Review feedback and incorporate ideas to improve a revised prototype.
(j) Outline time constraints that may exist in the production of a three-dimensional product.
