Module 2C: Workplace Safety (Core)

Note: Teachers should determine student familiarity with general safety in the work area. This will help determine if they require a review of concepts or more in-depth learning.

Outcome
Explore the safety standards of the energy and mining industries.
Indicators
(a) Compare current and historical safety statistics on injuries in the energy and mining industries.
(b) Identify strategies to mitigate risks and potential safety hazards in energy, petroleum and mining operations.
(c) Explore the use of zero energy state and lockout tagout features of equipment.
(d) Explain how the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) is used.
(e) Examine the reliance on basic safety policies when using advanced technology.
(f) Describe ways to reduce personal injury because of unsafe work activities (e.g., lifting heavy objects, travelling underground and blasting) or environments (e.g., working around large and noisy equipment, radiation exposure and working underground).
(g) Investigate ways to mitigate damage to equipment because of unsafe work activities or environments.
(h) Explore the safety regulations, procedures, equipment and personnel at local or regional mining, drilling and power generation sites.
(i) Describe the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) (e.g., masks, ear plugs, safety goggles and footwear) for respiratory, hearing, sight and body protection.
(j) Discuss the hierarchy of controls including elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative controls and PPE.
(k) Identify potential fire hazards and prevention procedures in underground mines, well sites and processing plants.
(l) Explain the importance of emergency response teams, drills and procedures at a mine site.
(m) Assess the consequences of failure of one or more worker safety programs or controls, whether through accident or not following established procedures.
(n) Explore the chief hazards and risks (e.g., high voltage power lines, turbines and ground falls) faced by workers in energy and mining industries.
