ENMI4
Module 4: Saskatchewan Geology and Geological History (Core)
Outcome
Investigate the scientific
theories and principles
that explain the
formation of landforms
on Earth and their
relationship to the
location of renewable
and non-renewable
resources.
Indicators
(a) | Explore the relationship between geology and physical geography. |
(b) | Describe the three rock types, the fundamental cycles of matter in the Earth's mantle, crust and atmosphere (e.g., hydrologic, mineral and rock cycles, subduction and carbon/carbonate cycle) and their role in the formation of mineral and energy resources. |
(c) | Examine the significance of the fundamental scientific principles of geology (e.g., principle of uniformitarianism, principle of superposition, principle of faunal succession and theory of plate tectonics) in understanding the present nature of Earth's surface, crust and sedimentary strata. |
(d) | Describe the formation of sedimentary strata in terms of origin of sedimentary material, transportation, deposition and lithification. |
(e) | Explain the role of sedimentary strata in the preservation of fossil materials, including fossil fuels (e.g., folding and hydrocarbon traps). |
(f) | Explore the importance of rocks and minerals to Indigenous people (e.g., use in ceremonies and hunting, as living spirits and within stories such as Grandfather Rock). |
(g) | Discuss the purpose of a stratigraphic chart and its importance to the energy and mining industries. |
(h) | Explore geologic time including age, eras, formations and relevance to modern day Saskatchewan geology. |
(i) | Describe the types of resources and commodities that are utilized from different formations (e.g., Bakken formation produces light oil). |
(j) | Identify mine locations, types of deposits and estimated reserves of natural resources (e.g., uranium, other metals, helium, diamonds, coal, oil, natural gas and potash) in Saskatchewan. |
(k) | Explain why geology and geological history are important in the energy and mining industries. |
