Investigate groundwater and how it is extracted.
Indicators
(a) Define groundwater.
(b) Describe the importance of groundwater based on its uses and availability locally and worldwide.
(c) Explain the hydrologic cycle with a focus on groundwater components.
(d) Describe the process of infiltration.
(e) Create a diagram of the subsurface configuration of hydrogeological layers containing groundwater.
(f) Explore how groundwater is extracted and the purpose of different types of wells (e.g., drilled vs. bored, withdrawal vs. monitoring and domestic vs. industrial).
(g) Explore the similarities and differences between saturated and unsaturated zones.
(h) Investigate the extraction of groundwater and the advantages and disadvantages on the environment and community at large (e.g., animals, vegetation, land subsidence and sinkhole formation, and the people of our province including surrounding Indigenous communities).
