Module 8: Environmental Impact (Core)
Outcome
Investigate the short and long-term
environmental impacts
of the energy and mining
industries.
Indicators
(a) | Explore the acts and regulations in place to protect the environment in energy and resource industries and how they are applied in practice. |
(b) | Investigate the factors (e.g., land, forests and waterways) considered when conducting an environmental impact study. |
(c) | Explore different reclamation and decommissioning plans (re-establishing native prairie grasslands, wetlands, and forest, agriculture, gas storage, or tourism). |
(d) |
Study one of the following environmental topics in Saskatchewan:
|
(e) | Examine the consultation process and government policies of an energy or mining project involving local communities and Indigenous peoples (e.g., Saskatchewan Treaty Land Entitlement Framework, Duty to Consult, Natural Resources Transfer Agreements, The Saskatchewan First Act, Mineral Resources Act, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulations and land permits). |
(f) | Identify specific safety, prevention and environmental protection procedures normally observed at a drilling, mining or processing site. |
(g) | Compare the environmental scores of the resource industry in Saskatchewan to the rest of the world. |
(h) | Examine the innovation and green solutions (e.g., Mcllvenna Bay in Northern Saskatchewan, the world's first carbon neutral copper project) that have been developed and implemented in the energy and mining sectors. |
(i) | Discuss the sustainability and environmental impact (e.g., bio fuels cause deforestation) of different green solutions. |
(j) | Explain the environmental protection measures in place to ensure proper decommissioning and reclamation of energy and mining projects. |
(k) | Examine the relationships and involvement of Indigenous people in the mining and energy sectors. |
(l) | Examine how different worldviews (e.g., First Nations and Métis and Western) impact human interaction with the land. |
(m) | Explore the importance of Indigenous storytelling to convey worldviews and knowledge about environmental sustainability. |
