ENMI15
Module 15: Petroleum Exploration (Optional)
Outcome
Investigate oil and gas exploration in Saskatchewan.
Indicators
(a) Identify historical and everyday uses of oil and gas.
(b) Investigate how oil and gas were discovered in Saskatchewan.
(c) Outline major events in the history of oil and gas exploration in Saskatchewan, Canada and globally.
(d) Investigate the permits (e.g., environmental, exploration and seismic), land permission, First Nations and Métis consultation and accommodations and not disturbing historic land (e.g., former settlements) that are required to explore for petroleum.
(e) Explain the relationship between the large-scale geology of an area and the process of locating oil and gas.
(f) Describe the theory and process of traditional seismic and subsurface imaging exploration.
(g)

Explore the theory and process of exploration techniques useful in locating potential petroleum-bearing sub-surface formations, including:

  • gravity field measurement;
  • magnetic field measurement;
  • aerial surveys; and,
  • satellite imagery.
(h) Investigate how petroleum and other fluids move within the Earth's crust.
(i) Describe the effect of rock porosity and permeability on the extraction of oil and gas.
(j) Investigate how exploration technology and processes collect data about oil and gas deposits.
(k) Explain how data is used to map the specific location of oil and gas deposits.
