Explore the uses and impact of coal mining on local communities.
Indicators
(a) Describe the general uses of each type of coal.
(b) Research the historical use of coal mined in Saskatchewan and how it has changed over time.
(c) Investigate how Saskatchewan coal can be used in the future.
(d) Identify possible secondary raw materials (e.g., rare earth elements and leonhardite) found with coal.
(e) Examine the uses and economic viability of secondary raw materials.
(f) Outline the variety of products (e.g., charcoal briquettes, activated carbon filters and synthetic compounds) manufactured using coal.
(g) Investigate the development of synthetic or hydrogen fuels from coal.
(h) Explore the government regulations and the adaptations made by the industry (e.g., electric draglines, diesel engines and carbon sequestration) to reduce carbon emissions.
(i) Examine the plans to transition away from coal towards renewable energies such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass and nuclear.
