Investigate the short- and long-term environmental impacts of the energy and mining industries.

Indicators for this outcome
(a) Explore the acts and regulations in place to protect the environment in energy and resource industries and how they are applied in practice.
(b) Assess the consequences of failure of one or more environmental safety programs or controls (e.g., oil well fire, natural gas leak and mining tailings dam failure), whether through accident or not following established procedures.
(c) Complete a case study of the environmental impact and resulting fines of past accidents in Saskatchewan (e.g., Husky pipeline leak into North Saskatchewan River and Nexen oil spill at Long Lake).
(d) Examine provincial policy on communication with Indigenous peoples including The First Nation and Métis Consultation Policy Framework (which includes the duty to consult) and federal or international policies like the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and The Indian Act.
(e) Explore the relationship between The Natural Resources Transfer Acts and The Saskatchewan First Act and its impact on both Indigenous peoples and resource industry stakeholders.
(f) Examine the duty to consult and the consultation process with local communities and Indigenous stakeholders on the environmental impact of an energy or mining project (e.g., mining, drilling, refinery, alternate energy and transportation of resources).
(g) Identify specific safety, prevention and environmental protection procedures normally observed at a drilling, mining or processing site.
(h) Investigate the factors (e.g., land, forests and waterways) considered when conducting an environmental impact study.
(i) Compare the environmental scores of the resource industry in Saskatchewan to the rest of the world.
(j) Examine the innovation and green solutions (e.g., Mcllvenna Bay in Northern Saskatchewan, the world’s first carbon neutral copper project) that have been developed and implemented in the energy and mining sectors.
(k) Discuss the sustainability and environmental impact (e.g., bio fuels cause deforestation) of different green solutions.
(l) Explore the environmental protection measures in place to ensure proper decommissioning and reclamation of energy and mining projects.
