Investigate the processes involved in planning for exploration of natural resources in Saskatchewan.

Indicators for this outcome
(a) Investigate the differences in permits (e.g., environmental, exploration and seismic), land permission, First Nations and Métis consultation and accommodations and not disturbing historic land (e.g., former settlements) that are required to explore for different natural resources (e.g., coal, potash, petroleum and uranium).
(b) Explore the impact of duty to consult on both Indigenous peoples and resource industry stakeholders.
(c) Identify the government acts (e.g., Mineral Resources Act) and regulations (e.g., the Mineral Tenure Registry and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulations) that govern the exploration for natural resources.
(d) Explain the distinction between mineral, surface and access rights for landowners.
(e) Investigate land rights, land acquisition, landowner consent and engagement with communities as important parts of exploration.
(f) Identify potential consequences of natural resource exploration including the impact on the environment (e.g., land, forests and waterways), conservation and sustainability.
(g) Discuss the reasons mining companies conduct feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments prior to engaging landowners in a pre-mining process.
(h) Describe the three main methods of oil/gas exploration.
(i) Explore the similarities and differences in the methods of exploration for oil/gas and mineral deposits.
(j) Analyze the difference in timelines of the general development processes of an oil/gas well and a mine.
