Explore the role of
land-based education
in forests and
forestry.
Indicators
(a) | Compare historical and contemporary forest use by First Nations and Métis people of Saskatchewan. |
(b) | Discuss traditional land use such as trapping, hunting, constructing traditional buildings, medicinal properties of plants and the use of plant materials. |
(c) | Research how an individual’s relationship to the land, cultural traditions and knowledge influences their worldviews and sense of self. |
(d) | Explore how the forestry industry respects worldviews and land-based education to guide partnerships that are mutually beneficial. |
(e) | Discuss the importance of petroglyph and archaeological sites to Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan. |
(f) | Discuss how petroglyph sites and archaeological sites are protected during the forest harvesting process. |
(g) | Reflect on an Elder’s or Knowledge Keeper’s shared stories about the significance of First Nations and/or Métis ceremonies and the spiritual importance of land. |
(h) | Distinguish how the spiritual importance of land connects to the harvesting process (e.g., partnerships in forestry that help identify sites that are not harvested). |
