Outcome
Explore the role of land-based education in forests and forestry.
Indicators
(a) Compare historical and contemporary forest use by First Nations and Métis people of Saskatchewan.
(b) Discuss traditional land use such as trapping, hunting, constructing traditional buildings, medicinal properties of plants and the use of plant materials.
(c) Research how an individual’s relationship to the land, cultural traditions and knowledge influences their worldviews and sense of self.
(d) Explore how the forestry industry respects worldviews and land-based education to guide partnerships that are mutually beneficial.
(e) Discuss the importance of petroglyph and archaeological sites to Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan.
(f) Discuss how petroglyph sites and archaeological sites are protected during the forest harvesting process.
(g) Reflect on an Elder’s or Knowledge Keeper’s shared stories about the significance of First Nations and/or Métis ceremonies and the spiritual importance of land.
(h) Distinguish how the spiritual importance of land connects to the harvesting process (e.g., partnerships in forestry that help identify sites that are not harvested).
