Module 12: Forest Sustainability (Optional)
Outcome
Analyze sustainability of trees, plants, soils, wildlife and water in Saskatchewan forests.
Indicators
(a) Describe the terms ecosystem, niche, habitat, biotic and abiotic as they pertain to forests.
(b) Examine interrelationships among tree structures and with the soil, water and wildlife involving vital life processes in a forest.
(c) Investigate the importance of soil and water in a forest ecosystem.
(d) Explain succession as it pertains to forest ecosystems.
(e) Discuss the different perspectives that community members such as businesses, farmers, consumers and producers have on forest sustainability.
(f) Compare different models of forest sustainability.
(g) Examine how forest sustainability impacts the forestry industry, the economy, communities and the environment.
(h) Research legislation, regulations, standards and codes put in place by Saskatchewan and Canada to maintain forests and regulate forestry.
(i) Discuss sustainable practices that companies adhere to in maintaining Saskatchewan forests.
(j) Reflect on First Nations and Métis worldviews (e.g., keepers of the land) related to forest sustainability.
(k) Examine how different worldviews impact human interaction with forests.
