Module 14A: Forest Fires (Optional)
Outcome
Examine the behaviour and impact of forest fires.
Indicators
(a) Identify the main causes of forest fires (e.g., lightening and human).
(b) Distinguish among different types (e.g., ground, surface, crown) and characteristics (e.g., severity and intensity) of forest fires.
(c) Explain how fuel type such as surface grass, weather conditions such as wind and rain, and ground conditions such as inclines are used to predict behaviour of a fire.
(d) Review fire history maps and look for long-term and short-term patterns.
(e) Interpret the impact of the types of fires on the ecology of the affected area.
(f) Examine the frequency and impact of fires on different forest regions in Saskatchewan and Canada.
(g) Compare the annual area affected by forest fires to the amount of area harvested annually.
(h) Analyze the impact of fires on Saskatchewan forests over time (e.g., regeneration, how specific tree and plant species respond after a fire).
