Module 14A: Forest Fires (Optional)
Outcome
Examine the
behaviour and impact
of forest fires.
Indicators
(a) | Identify the main causes of forest fires (e.g., lightening and human). |
(b) | Distinguish among different types (e.g., ground, surface, crown) and characteristics (e.g., severity and intensity) of forest fires. |
(c) | Explain how fuel type such as surface grass, weather conditions such as wind and rain, and ground conditions such as inclines are used to predict behaviour of a fire. |
(d) | Review fire history maps and look for long-term and short-term patterns. |
(e) | Interpret the impact of the types of fires on the ecology of the affected area. |
(f) | Examine the frequency and impact of fires on different forest regions in Saskatchewan and Canada. |
(g) | Compare the annual area affected by forest fires to the amount of area harvested annually. |
(h) | Analyze the impact of fires on Saskatchewan forests over time (e.g., regeneration, how specific tree and plant species respond after a fire). |
