FRST16
Module 16: Silviculture (Optional)
Outcome
Investigate the role of silviculture within the forestry industry.
Indicators
(a) Define silviculture and describe how it differs from forestry.
(b) Summarize different natural and artificial silviculture techniques.
(c) Practise growing techniques including bare-root, container seedlings or broadcasting seeds.
(d) Conduct an experiment to determine what factors (e.g., soil pH, moisture, sunlight and carbon dioxide) impact growing conditions.
(e) Research silviculture practices such as natural regeneration, fire, thinning and rotation ages, by different companies in Saskatchewan.
(f) Identify reasons for reforestation and afforestation practices used in Saskatchewan (e.g., shelterbelts, wildlife habitat protection, decreasing erosion and increasing biodiversity).
(g) Explain ecological requirements (e.g., soil and moisture) and management implications (e.g., growth rates, yield, wildlife impact, height and diameter) for a chosen tree species (e.g., spruce, aspen and pine).
(h) Discuss how emulating natural disturbances (e.g., wind, fire, insects and disease) is accomplished in silviculture.
(i) Research how harvesting practices have changed over the years (e.g., move from geometric shapes of clear cuts, leaving intact islands or retention structures to maintain diversity, clear cut to maintain even aged and pure stands) because of silviculture.
(j) Conduct an inquiry into how the Indigenous worldview (i.e., humans are keepers of the land and all living creatures are connected) relates to current silviculture practices.
