Module 2A: Leave No Trace - Fundamentals (Core)
Outcome
Investigate the connection between “Leave No Trace” principles and traditional ways of sustainably living on the land.
Indicators
(a)

Describe the “Leave No Trace” principles, including:

  • plan ahead and prepare;
  • travel and camp on durable surfaces;
  • dispose of waste properly;
  • leave what is found;
  • minimize campfire impacts;
  • respect wildlife; and,
  • be considerate of other visitors.
(b)

Discuss how the “Leave No Trace” principles align with traditional Indigenous practices, including the ethics of:

  • conservation (i.e., not to take more than is needed); and,
  • reciprocity (i.e., offer acts of thankfulness).
(c) Explain how pre-excursion planning minimizes resource damage.
(d) Describe how to leave the environment cleaner than found, such as picking up own and others' litter, including biodegradable material (e.g., sunflower seeds).
(e) Explore opportunities for certification in “Leave No Trace” training.
(f) Investigate how “Leave No Trace” guidelines may be applied in different geographical locations depending on population.
