Module 2B: Leave No Trace - Application (Optional)
Outcome
Practise the “Leave No Trace” principles on outdoor excursions.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the importance of planning and preparing in advance of excursions, including to ensure safety and minimize resource damage.
(b) Compare the effects on the land of camping and traveling on and off durable surfaces.
(c)

Demonstrate respect for the natural setting by:

  • minimizing campsite alterations;
  • avoiding damage to trees and plants; and,
  • leaving natural objects where they are found.
(d)

Explore options for proper disposal of human waste outdoors, such as:

  • digging catholes;
  • portable toilets; and,
  • packing out waste (e.g., toilet paper and feminine hygiene products).
(e) Investigate minimal impact alternatives to cooking over a fire (e.g., envirostove, fire box and gas stove).
(f)

Explain considerations for minimizing the effects of building a fire, including:

  • using existing fire rings;
  • using deadfall for fuel;
  • burning fuel to white ash; and,
  • packing out campfire litter.
(g) Demonstrate respect for wildlife by keeping distance and storing food securely.
(h) Discuss options for dealing with food waste (e.g., completely burning and packing out).
