Module 3B: Wilderness Safety - First Aid (Optional)
Outcome
Explore basic first aid skills used to treat minor to severe injuries.
Indicators
(a) Explain the terms “first aid,” “first aider” and “Good Samaritan law.”
(b) Describe how to ensure the safety of the person providing first aid (e.g., gloves and scan the area).
(c) Identify injuries common to an activity (e.g., head injuries while cycling) and steps taken to prevent them (e.g., wearing a helmet).
(d) Define primary and secondary surveys in first aid.

Explore prevention and treatment of injuries that could be acquired from engaging in outdoor activities, such as:

  • cuts, burns and blisters;
  • sprains;
  • anaphylaxis;
  • broken limbs;
  • hypothermia and hyperthermia; and,
  • frostbite and sunburn.
(f) Explain the additional risks of emergency situations that occur in the wilderness, such as lack of proximity to treatment and lack of sterilization.
(g) Compare the items appropriate to include in a personal first aid kit (e.g., band-aids, personal medications and sunscreen) and a group first aid kit (e.g., medical gloves, gauze and bandages).
(h) Explore opportunities for, and benefits of, being certified in first aid.
