Participate in a
variety of outdoor
activities.
Indicators
(a) | Explain the role of physical conditioning in safe and comfortable outdoor experiences. |
(b) | Compare nutritional and hydration requirements when participating in light to heavy exercise. |
(c) | Display basic swimming skills such as floating, treading water and kicking and stroking. |
(d) | Explain the “Swim to Survive” standard of the Life Saving Society. |
(e) | Demonstrate basic canoe safety and rescue skills, such as getting in and out of a canoe, carrying a canoe, t-rescues and effective throw bag technique. |
(f) | Practise canoe strokes (e.g., forward and reverse, draw, pry, j-stroke or stern rudder, sweep and brace) for different purposes. |
(g) | Exhibit use of basic cycling techniques such as hand signals, braking safely and gear shifting to accommodate for changes in incline. |
(h) | Apply hiking skills (e.g., pacing, adjusting pack, stretching and resting) when hiking in various terrains, such as urban and wilderness treks. |
(i) | Demonstrate safe techniques in climbing activities (e.g., high ropes and wall climbing). |
(j) | Experiment with different snowshoe skills (e.g., step and kick turns, striding, stamping and edging). |
(k) | Practise cross-country ski techniques (e.g., diagonal stride on flat ground, herringbone uphill and snowplough downhill) for different purposes. |
(l) | Engage in outdoor evening activities such as star gazing, identifying moon phases and night hiking. |
