Explore basic and traditional navigational skills.
Indicators
(a) Discuss Indigenous navigational skills and tools with an Elder or Knowledge Keeper.
(b) Research different types of navigation techniques (e.g., natural, celestial, compass and technological).
(c)

Explain the basic functionality of a compass, including the following terms:

  • base plate;
  • travel arrow;
  • magnetic field;
  • magnetic north;
  • geographic “true” north; and,
  • orienteering lines.
(d) Travel on a bearing without a map.
(e) Determine individual pace length and use it to measure distances.
(f) Explain the basic functionality of a Global Positioning System (GPS).
(g) Use a GPS to navigate a given route and arrive at a destination (e.g., geocaching).
