Outcome
Apply knot-tying skills in a variety of situations.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the importance of strong cordage and efficient knot skills in Indigenous ways of living off the land.
(b) Apply knot-tying skills to related outdoor skills, such as tying up tarp shelters, tying fishing knots (e.g., fisherman's knot and palomar knot) and tying nets.
(c)

Experiment with the craft of rope making, including:

  • preparing fibres (e.g., hemp, stinging nettle and animal hair) for spinning into yarns;
  • spinning yarns into cords;
  • twisting cords into strands; and,
  • twisting strands into rope.
(d) Explain the factors to consider in rope making (e.g., strength and breaking point).
(e) Investigate the usefulness of paracord in bushcraft survival.
(f) Experiment with the application of paracord in paracord crafts (e.g., lanyards and bracelets).
