Outcome
Explore traditional and contemporary shelters.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the cultural and traditional stories and teachings related to Indigenous shelters with an Elder or Knowledge Keeper.
(b) Research traditional Indigenous shelters (e.g., tipi) and their purpose (e.g., housing, sweat and smudge).
(c) Explore opportunities to participate in a tipi-raising.
(d) Explain the significance of the parts (e.g., bottom, fire, flaps and poles) of a tipi.
(e) Investigate the benefits and drawbacks of different styles of tents.
(f)

Describe the function of various parts of a tent, such as:

  • fly to keep out rain and wind;
  • guy lines to support the tent against wind;
  • groundsheet to protect the floor of the tent; and,
  • poles to provide structure.
(g) Investigate how to erect a tent and secure it using pegs and guy lines.
