Module 7B: Wilderness Shelters (Optional)
Outcome
Practise a variety of sustainable shelter-building techniques.
Indicators
(a) Demonstrate mindfulness (e.g., take only what is needed) and gratitude (e.g., offering tobacco) when harvesting materials for shelters.
(b) Compare the differences between building shelters for emergency and recreational situations.
(c) Explore natural environmental features that provide shelter from the elements, such as depressions in the ground, holes from tree roots and lowhanging branches.
(d) Examine factors that affect shelter choice (e.g., number of people requiring shelter, available materials and their cost, weather and animals).
(e)

Demonstrate how to construct various styles of natural shelters, such as:

  • debris (i.e., material gathered from the forest floor);
  • log shelter;
  • lean-to; and,
  • A-frame.
(f)

Experiment with various types of tarp-based shelters, such as:

  • wrap or cocoon;
  • pup-tent;
  • A-frame; and,
  • Mors Kochanski's “super-shelter”.
(g) Describe optimal snow conditions and construction of various snow shelters (e.g., quinzhee, snow cave and igloo).
(h) Practise “Leave No Trace” principles by dismantling shelters when they are no longer required.
