Module 9A: Basic Fire Skills (Optional)
Outcome
Demonstrate respectful and safe basic fire-building skills.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the cultural and traditional significance of fire, including sacred fires, with an Elder or Knowledge Keeper.
(b) Investigate the significance of fire in other cultures.
(c) Demonstrate respect for the natural environment by conserving fuel and by practicing an act of mindfulness when harvesting material to burn.
(d)

Discuss how controlled and maintained fires can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

  • warmth;
  • cooking;
  • protection;
  • signalling;
  • place to gather; and,
  • environmental protection (e.g., protect against invasive species and prevent forest fires).
(e) Research local fire regulations (e.g., no open fires and fire bans).
(f) Discuss the risk of using accelerants when lighting fires.
(g)

Prepare the fire site with consideration for fire safety, including:

  • having water nearby for extinguishing;
  • being prepared with a shovel to smother with dirt;
  • avoiding low-hanging canopy; and,
  • clearing the ground to prevent unintentional spreading.
(h) Discuss commonly used types of household tinder (e.g., cotton ball and newspaper).
(i) Explain the importance of gradually increasing the size of kindling.
(j) Practise safely lighting and maintaining fires in favourable conditions with common ignition sources, tinder and kindling.
(k) Demonstrate how to determine when a fire is fully extinguished.
