Module 12A: Angling and Fishing - Fundamentals (Core)
Outcome
Investigate the fundamentals of angling and fishing.
Indicators
(a) Explain the significance of access to fish in the context of Indigenous food sovereignty.
(b) Explain the differences between angling (i.e., uses a hook and line) and other types of fishing.
(c) Investigate various types of fishing (e.g., jigging, casting, trolling, fly fishing and net).
(d)

Analyze the factors (e.g., cost, eco-friendly and purpose) in selecting fishing equipment, such as:

  • rods and reels (e.g., ice-fishing, tip ups and casting);
  • tackle (e.g., spoons, jigs, rigs and lead-free);
  • netting (e.g., gill net, dip net, seine net and trap net); and,
  • bait sources.
(e)

Describe common ways of classifying fish, such as:

  • species relationship (e.g., salmonids, percids and minnows);
  • water temperature preference (e.g., cold and warm); and,
  • feeding habits (e.g., fish eaters, insect eaters and plant eaters).
(f) Identify the distinguishing characteristics (e.g., physical features, habitat, spawning habits, feeding habits and angling techniques) of major game fish species in Saskatchewan.
(g) Investigate the role of local fishing industries (e.g., fish farms and fish hatcheries) in Saskatchewan.
