Module 12B: Angling and Fishing - Safe Practices and Regulations (Optional)
Outcome
Demonstrate safe angling and fishing practices and understanding of regulations.
Indicators
(a) Discuss who is eligible, and how to apply, for an angling license.
(b) Demonstrate safe fishing practices, such as using barbless hooks, keeping hooks and lures in tackle boxes, wearing eye protection and using dehooking tools to remove hooks.
(c)

Explain proper maintenance of common fishing equipment, including:

  • dry out rods and tackle when not in use;
  • loosen drag tension for storage; and,
  • oil the reel.
(d) Explore how to craft fishing equipment, including a tip-up or rod.
(e) Experiment with different angling techniques (e.g., ice fishing, open water fishing, bait fishing and fly-fishing) for different purposes.
(f) Describe ethical fishing practices, such as catch and release, barbless hooks and lead-free tackle.
(g) Compare the techniques for care of table fish and trophy fish.
(h)

Describe the fish-harvesting process, including considerations such as:

  • filleting technique;
  • leaving one inch of fish skin;
  • preservation options (e.g., canning, pickling, freezing and smoking); and,
  • performing an act of mindfulness for the harvest.
(i) Discuss the importance of referring to the Saskatchewan Anglers Guide for information such as season dates, zones and limits.
(j) Research fishing regulations and associated legislations (e.g., protection and conservation of fish, conduct of fisherman and small vessel legislation) that provide a legal standard of conduct for game fishing.
(k) Discuss the fishing license regulations for different user groups (e.g., First Nations people, youth under 16 and seniors).
(l) Investigate the differences in fishing regulations (e.g., equipment and limits) in national parks and other regions.
