WILD12C
Module 12C: Angling and Fishing - Aquatic Environment (Optional)
Outcome
Examine the relationship between fish populations and the aquatic environment.
Indicators
(a) Examine the habitats that make the Saskatchewan ecozones, and corresponding treaty territories, conducive to fish species (e.g., rocky, deep lakes of the Boreal Shield are good for walleye).
(b) Explore the water characteristics (e.g., still or moving, temperature, dissolved oxygen, depth, alkalinity and acidity) that influence the distribution and abundance of fish.
(c) Conduct a pond-dipping study to analyze what the invertebrate population indicates about the fish species.
(d) Research the effects (e.g., reducing biodiversity and habitat quality) of aquatic invasive species (e.g., zebra and quagga mussels) in Saskatchewan.
(e) Explain strategies (e.g., clean, drain and dry boats between bodies of water) to mitigate the spread of invasive aquatic species.
(f) Identify non-native species (e.g., trout) that have been introduced for sport fishing in Saskatchewan.
(g) Explain the role of the Provincial Fisheries Management Plan in managing fish populations in Saskatchewan.
(h)

Investigate strategies for managing Saskatchewan’s fish populations, including:

  • fishing regulations;
  • fish stocking or augmentation;
  • monitoring population;
  • aquatic habitat development and improvement;
  • law enforcement; and,
  • public information programs.
