Module 13A: Hunting and Game - Safe Practices and Regulations (Core)
Outcome
Investigate hunting regulations and safe hunting practices.
Indicators
(a) Explore Treaty and Métis Aboriginal hunting rights and where they may be exercised in Saskatchewan.
(b) Explain the significance of access to wild game in the context of Indigenous food sovereignty.
(c) Investigate regulations and safety requirements contained in the annual Saskatchewan Hunters and Trappers Guide.
(d) Describe the steps to obtain a hunting license.
(e) Explain what it means to be drawn for big game.
(f)

Research federal, provincial and municipal laws and regulations that prevent risk to Saskatchewan hunters, such as:

  • lawful hunting hours;
  • wearing high-visibility clothing when applicable; and,
  • hunting prohibited from a vehicle without dispensation.
(g) Discuss requirements and best practices for obtaining permission to access private property for hunting.
(h) Explore provincial and federal regulations specific for youth hunters.
(i) Describe safety procedures when hunting.
(j) Identify common game animals in Saskatchewan using distinguishing characteristics.
(k) Distinguish between threatening animal behaviours (e.g., pawing the ground and snarling) and normal behaviours (e.g., “escorting” humans away from a den) that do not pose a threat to humans.
(l) Explain precautions (e.g., sanitization, wearing gloves, bleed and remove intestines quickly and keep meat cool) that can be taken to minimize the risks (e.g., contamination) of consuming game meat.
