Explore the evolution and safe use of firearms.
Indicators
(a) Discuss how the introduction of firearms affected the Indigenous way of life in Saskatchewan.
(b) Research the history and evolution of firearms (e.g., muzzle-loaded rifles, breech-loading rifles, repeating firearms, semi-automatic firearms, openand telescopic-sights).
(c) Categorize commonly used hunting firearms (e.g., rifles, shotguns and black or modern powder firearms) according to their distinguishing features and purpose.
(d) Explain the operation of various firearms, including the types of action, ammunition and function of sights.
(e) Describe the basic components of rifle and shotgun ammunition.
(f) Discuss the ethics of using the appropriate firearm calibre for the target game species.
(g) Investigate ammunition considerations (e.g., size of bullet, casing and gun powder in the casing).
(h) Describe safe practices for storing, transporting, handling, maintaining, loading and sighting-in firearms
(i) Discuss how hunting and firearm use may be made available to persons with physical disabilities, including those with visual impairment.
(j) Investigate hunting training opportunities and firearm licensing requirements (e.g., Hunter Safety Course and Possession and Acquisition License).
