Module 21A: Outdoor Excursion - Local (Optional)
Outcome
Plan and facilitate an outdoor excursion in the local community.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the importance of land acknowledgements (e.g., naming the traditional peoples of the area, identifying the treaty and partnerships with local Indigenous people) when participating in local excursions.
(b) Reflect upon the traditional stories of the land where the local excursion will take place.
(c)

Explore short excursion options appropriate for the season and group, such as:

  • investigate deer density in local area;
  • reflect on personal growth with a sit-spot;
  • identify animal tracks; and,
  • record plant observations.
(d) Investigate the principles of layering clothing and appropriate fabric choices depending on the season, weather conditions and activity.
(e) Identify which supplies are required for the excursion.
(f) Establish communication routines (e.g., whistle commands and carry contact information) in emergency situations both within and outside of cell phone range.
(g) Identify the route, possible exit points and muster point for the excursion.
(h) Evaluate possible risks (e.g., weather, terrain, animals and plants) that may be encountered.
(i) Plan for hydration and nutrition requirements appropriate to the excursion.
