Module 21B: Outdoor Excursion - Overnight (Optional)
Outcome
Plan and facilitate an overnight outdoor excursion.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the importance of land acknowledgements (e.g., naming the traditional peoples of the area, identifying the treaty and partnerships with local Indigenous people) when participating in overnight excursions.
(b) Reflect upon the traditional stories of the land where the overnight excursion will take place.
(c)

Explain and demonstrate use of the principles of layering clothing, including:

  • base layer (i.e., wicks moisture away from the skin);
  • mid layer (i.e., insulates to preserve body warmth); and,
  • outer layer (i.e., protection from weather).
(d) Select and collect appropriate equipment for the excursion.
(e)

Conduct an equipment check prior to excursion to ensure functionality, including:

  • operating Naptha gas stoves (i.e., lighting and unflooding);
  • erecting tents; and,
  • verifying stock in First Aid kit.
(f) Discuss the importance of carrying a personal survival kit (e.g., compass, personal medications, knife and emergency blanket).
(g) Practise communication routines (e.g., whistle commands and satellite phone) in emergency situations both within and outside of cell phone range.
(h) Establish plans for emergency situations such as extreme weather conditions, fire, injury, illness, becoming lost or animal threats.
(i) Identify factors (e.g., pain, cold, hunger, fatigue and fear) that affect the ability to cope with emergency conditions in the outdoors.
(j) Plan appropriate menus for the excursion and group.
(k) Develop a budget for the menu and other excursion costs.
(l) Explain the risks of consuming untreated water and methods (e.g., filters, chemical treatment and boiling) of water purification.
(m) Prevent food from spoiling and attracting wildlife by using safe food storage practices (e.g., appropriate containers, bear-proof containers and hanging food).
(n) Plan and prepare a meal cooked over a fire or gas stove.
