Module 21C: Outdoor Excursion - Multi-night (Optional)
Outcome
Plan and facilitate a multi-night outdoor excursion.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the importance of land acknowledgements (e.g., naming the traditional peoples of the area, identifying the treaty and partnerships with local Indigenous people) when participating in multi-night outdoor excursions.
(b) Reflect upon the traditional stories of the land where the multi-night outdoor excursion will take place.
(c) Explore possible activities appropriate for the season and group, such as hiking, canoeing, cycling, skiing or snowshoeing into camp.
(d)

Explain how clothing and packing choices are influenced by factors such as:

  • season and weather;
  • minimal space for packing; and,
  • safe-carry weight (i.e., limiting packs to appropriate weight for body size and ability).
(e) Discuss the importance of, and methods for ensuring, personal hygiene when spending multiple days outdoors.
(f) Inspect and prepare equipment (e.g., life jackets, paddles, bike tires and camp stoves) for the excursion.
(g) Examine alternatives to equipment that may better supply needs or lessen impact on the environment.
(h)

Review forms of communication when traveling to remote areas, such as:

  • pre-arranged communication plans;
  • filing a route plan with someone not on the excursion; and,
  • ensuring means of communication beyond cell phone coverage (e.g., satellite phone and messaging device).
(i)

Critique possible sites for campsite selection with consideration of:

  • site exposure and drainage;
  • weather considerations (e.g., protection from wind);
  • access to water and firewood;
  • impact on flora and fauna; and,
  • proximity to potential dangers.
(j)

Plan a menu for the excursion that addresses considerations such as:

  • group size;
  • nutrition and diet requirements;
  • length of excursion and cost;
  • minimal packaging; and,
  • food spoilage.
