Demonstrate basic knot-tying skills.

Indicators for this outcome
(a) Explore the materials (e.g., plant fibres and animal sources) used to make traditional Indigenous cordage.
(b) Review the properties of familiar knots (e.g., tying shoes).
(c) Identify the basic families of knots (e.g., loops, hitches, bends and lashings).
(d) Explain the properties of an effective knot (e.g., serves the purpose, easy to tie and easy to untie).
(e)

Practise efficiency with tying knots for various purposes, such as:

  • Anchor Knot or Non-Inverting Slippery Bowline (e.g., suspending a hammock);
  • Friction Hitch, Prussik or Midshipman's Hitch (e.g., adjustable loop for length);
  • Sheet Bend (e.g., connecting ropes of unequal diameter);
  • Canadian Jam Knot (e.g., connecting two objects); and,
  • Trucker's Hitch (e.g., securing loads).
