Explore the types of fasteners used by machinists.
Indicators
(a) Follow safe work practices when using fasteners, including maintaining a clean and organized work area.
(b) Identify fasteners based on specifications such as metric/SAE (e.g., Unified National Coarse [UNC], Unified National Fine [UNF]), grade, length, diameter and thread pitch or count.
(c) Decode the nomenclature associated with threaded fasteners.
(d) Describe the application of fasteners including pins, rivets, keys and self-locking tapers.
(e) Select and use appropriate tools to manipulate fasteners.
(f) Explore how adhesives and sealants are used as fasteners and how some are not compatible if mixed.
(g) Investigate the need for safe, proper handling of adhesives.
(h) Explain the importance of tightening sequence and torque values of specific fasteners.
(i) Utilize torque wrenches to properly tighten fasteners.
(j) Complete thread repair of damaged fasteners using a tap and die set.
(k) Select and use appropriate tools to extract broken fasteners.
(l) Describe the use of commercially available products to assist with the removal (e.g., penetrating oil) or securing of fasteners (e.g., Loctite).
