MACH23
Module 23: Cutting Screw Threads on a Lathe (Core)
Outcome
Investigate the cutting of screw threads on a lathe.
Indicators
(a) Perform safe practices when cutting threads on a lathe.
(b) Identify thread types using gauges (e.g., ACME, 60-degree V, multi-start and tapered pipe).
(c) Demonstrate a lathe set-up for cutting threads.
(d) Select the appropriate form cutting tool to suit thread application.
(e) Calculate thread depth using the appropriate formula.
(f) Assess class of thread fit (i.e., external threads 1A, 2A and 3A and internal threads 1B, 2B and 3B) using gauges and fasteners.
(g) Explore thread measuring techniques (e.g., screw pitch gauge, measuring threads over wires and thread micrometers).
(h) Perform thread cutting process (e.g., imperial, metric, external, internal) on a lathe.
