Module 44: Career Opportunities in Machining (Core)
Outcome
Explore career opportunities in the machining trades.
Indicators
(a) Explore the relationship between machining and different types of manufacturing.
(b) Create a list of personal interests, skills and traits that could lead to a career in the agricultural equipment trade.
(c) Investigate related occupations in the machining trade (e.g., automotive machinist, tool and die makers, metallurgist and millwrights).
(d) Research which machining-related occupations are facing shortages, and which are oversubscribed locally, regionally or provincially.
(e) Examine the roles, responsibilities, educational qualifications and personal and professional qualities common to people involved in machining-related occupations.
(f)

Reflect upon personal suitability or non-suitability for a specific machining-related occupation considering criteria such as:

  • initial and continuing educational requirements;
  • duties and skills required for this occupation;
  • work environment, including typical hours and shifts worked and typical locations;
  • current wages received in Saskatchewan and how these compare to the rest of Canada;
  • physical, mental and emotional stresses related to this occupation;
  • workplace hazards and safety considerations;
  • other occupations with which they interact;
  • apprenticeship and/or certification requirements in Canada and Saskatchewan; and,
  • future trends impacting the trade.
(g) Research technical training options (e.g., Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) for the machining trades.
(h) Participate in a field trip to a local machine shop.
(i) Conduct an interview of a journeyperson to gain an understanding of local careers in the machining trades.
(j)

Envision oneself or another individual employed in the field of machining in the future and describe the corresponding career journey including:

  • a description of the position (e.g., location, occupation, employer, working conditions, duties/responsibilities, salary and benefits);
  • skills, characteristics, attitudes, traits and interests that led to the career choice;
  • education and training;
  • mentorship opportunities accessed and offered to others;
  • leadership opportunities; and,
  • a summary of the supports provided by networks of individuals and organizations.
