Module 1: An Introduction to Emergency Services (Core)
Outcome
Analyze various components of local, provincial and national emergency services.
Indicators
(a) Explain the legal concept of duty to act.
(b) Describe ways (e.g., reducing hazards in and around homes and workplaces, taking first aid training, learning how to use a fire extinguisher) to personally prepare for emergency situations.
(c) Discuss the role of emergency services in ensuring public safety and health.
(d) Differentiate between a first responder and an emergency responder.
(e) Identify the primary areas that constitute emergency services in Saskatchewan and Canada (e.g., police, fire, emergency medical services, search and rescue).
(f)

Research activities that fall under each of the primary emergency services areas, such as:

  • police (e.g., law enforcement, criminal investigation, maintenance of public order);
  • fire (e.g., fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials mitigation);
  • emergency medical services (e.g., ambulance, medical assessment and support of rescuers working in a hot zone); and,
  • search and rescue.
(g) Describe the responsibilities of individuals, municipal responders, provincial government and federal government have in emergency response in Saskatchewan and Canada.
(h) Assess the accessibility of emergency services locally and provincially.
(i)

Discuss factors that determine the availability of, and access to, emergency services, such as:

  • location;
  • user fees; and,
  • recruitment and employment of emergency services workers.
