Module 3: Careers in Emergency Services (Core)
Outcome
Investigate paid and volunteer career opportunities in emergency services.
Indicators
(a) Research characteristics and skills common to those who work in emergency services.
(b)

Generate a list of questions to ask someone working in emergency services to learn about their work. Sample questions may include:

  • What is your role/position?
  • What does a typical day look like?
  • What knowledge and skills do you use every day?
  • What are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of your work?
  • Why did you choose this career?
  • What motivates you to go to work every day?
(c) Identify current and projected employment trends in emergency services at the local, provincial and regional level.
(d) Explore opportunities for volunteering in emergency services within the local community.
(e) Reflect on personal interests, skills, abilities and traits that could lead to a variety of career choices and volunteer opportunities in emergency services.
(f)

Develop a plan for an individual pursuing a career or volunteering in emergency services, considering criteria such as:

  • initial and continuing educational and training requirements;
  • training incentives;
  • duties and skills required for the occupation or volunteer position;
  • work conditions, including typical hours and shift work and typical locations;
  • current wages received in Saskatchewan and how these compare to wages in other regions of Canada;
  • physical, mental and emotional stresses related to the occupation;
  • workplace hazards and safety considerations;
  • other occupations with which they interact; and,
  • certification requirements in Saskatchewan and Canada.
