Module 5A: Psychological Health and Well-being (Core)

Outcome
Examine the state of
psychological health
and well-being among
emergency services
personnel in Canada.
Indicators
(a) | Discuss the correlation between personal psychological preparedness and the ability to respond effectively in an emergency. |
(b) | Research sources of stress (e.g., traumatic events, shift work, separation from family, public disrespect) commonly experienced by emergency services personnel. |
(c) | Identify mental health challenges such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder, general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder and alcohol use disorder commonly experienced by emergency services personnel. |
(d) | Examine statistics related to the prevalence of psychological health challenges among emergency services personnel in Canada. |
(e) | Explore the personal feelings, symptoms and behaviours commonly associated with various psychological health challenges. |
(f) | Research statistics related to suicidal ideation, plans and attempts among emergency services personnel in Canada. |
(g) | Discuss the impact of psychological health challenges faced by emergency services personnel on self and others (e.g., family, co-workers, friends). |
(h) | Assess the purpose of, and steps associated with, the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing process as a traumatic intervention tool commonly used among emergency services workers. |
(i) | Investigate self-care strategies (e.g., writing in a journal, talking to others such as family and co-workers about feelings and experiences, practising breathing and relaxation techniques, maintaining a healthy diet, getting adequate sleep and exercise) that support mental health and well-being of emergency services personnel. |
(j) | Research ways in which others (e.g., family, co-workers, friends) can support emergency services personnel facing psychological health challenges. |
(k) | Discuss characteristics (e.g., registered, licensed, evidence-based) of a credible source for psychological support. |
(l) | Identify credible Saskatchewan and Canadian sources that offer supports for emergency services personnel experiencing psychological health challenges and for their family members. |
