Outcome
Investigate the application of effective communications during an emergency.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the importance of effective communication during an emergency.
(b) Examine strategies for communicating effectively during an emergency.
(c) Describe the interpersonal skills required of those working or assisting at an emergency.
(d) Identify the methods (i.e., radio/telecommunications, interpersonal, written/data) of emergency communications.
(e) Justify the most appropriate communication method for a variety of given emergency situations.
(f) Research the history and current usage of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) phonetic alphabet in emergency communications.
(g) Converse with others using the NATO phonetic alphabet.
(h) Explore tips for basic etiquette (e.g., introduce oneself immediately, speak clearly, listen intently) that contribute to effective communication.
(i) Describe the components of a Location, Conditions, Actions, Needs (LCAN) report.
(j) Describe instances when an LCAN report could be used in emergency communications.
(k) Examine the history, usage and coverage of the Provincial Public Safety Telecommunications Network (PPSTN).
(l) Examine procedures for sending and receiving radio messages while using the PPSTN.
(m) Describe the purpose and components of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in an emergency situation.
(n) Examine reasons why basic common language rather than 10 codes are used in interagency emergency communication.
(o) Investigate the purpose of public safety alert systems (e.g., SaskAlert, Amber Alert, Silver Alert) in Saskatchewan and Canada.
