Module 16: Portable Fire Extinguishers (Optional)
Outcome
Examine the storage, maintenance and use of portable fire extinguishers.
Indicators
(a) Describe the characteristics, uses and limitations of the three main types of portable fire extinguishers (water, CO2, dry chemical).
(b) Research the cost and availability of fire extinguishers for various locations (e.g., home, school, work).
(c)

Identify the parts of a fire extinguisher, including:

  • cylinder containing the extinguishing agent and a propellant;
  • release system comprised of a squeeze handle, a valve assembly and a release lever;
  • gauge with over/under pressure indicator;
  • safety mechanism comprised of a tamper seal and a pull pin; and,
  • hose for directing the extinguishing agent.
(d) Examine the relationship among the various parts of a fire extinguisher.
(e) Describe the importance of, and steps for, safely storing, inspecting (e.g., monthly, yearly), testing and maintaining a portable fire extinguisher.
(f) Assess the service life of a traditional and disposable fire extinguisher and the factors that might put them out of service.
(g) Investigate the process for safely disposing of a fire extinguisher.
(h) Explain the use of the Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep (PASS) method for safely operating a fire extinguisher.
