Module 18: Personal Protective Equipment and Clothing for Firefighting (Core)
Outcome
Assess the use of personal protective equipment and clothing in firefighting.
Indicators
(a) Identify hazards (e.g., excessive heat, smoke, dust, fumes) commonly faced by firefighters.
(b) Investigate types of firefighting PPE and clothing (e.g., gloves, boots, undergarments, helmets, face shields, hearing protection, respiratory protection).
(c) Describe when, where and how specific pieces of firefighting PPE and clothing are deployed.
(d) Investigate the evolution and use of PPE technology in firefighting.
(e) Examine characteristics and features of firefighting PPE and clothing that make them effective.
(f) Assess challenges (e.g., restricted visibility, weight, heat tolerance, weather) associated with use of a variety of firefighting PPE and clothing.
(g) Explain the procedures to donning and doffing of firefighting PPE in a variety of circumstances including darkness.
(h) Determine the selection of PPE appropriate for a variety of firefighting scenarios.
(i) Research the impacts (e.g, medical, psychological) of incorrect use of PPE in firefighting.
