Module 20: Fire Behaviour and Suppression (Optional)
Outcome
Explore the relationship between fire behaviour and the selection and use of fire suppression techniques.
Indicators
(a) Research deployment techniques used for a variety of extinguishing agents.
(b) Discuss the relationship between fuel type and the quantity and types of extinguishing agents available.
(c) Identify factors that impact the speed of fire development, such as the characteristics of fuel involved and ventilation.
(d) Describe the information contained within a pre-incident plan that assists firefighters in determining appropriate firefighting attack techniques on the scene of a building/structure fire within the community.
(e) Assess the availability and distribution of water in the community and surrounding area for the purpose of firefighting (e.g., via water hydrants or tanker trucks).
(f) Explain the terms flashover and backdraft.
(g) Examine methods to prevent and manage flashover and backdraft.
(h) Research the B-SAHF indicators of fire behaviour (i.e., Building, Smoke and Air track, Heat, Flame) that help firefighters locate a fire and respond appropriately.
(i) Identify various ventilation techniques that could potentially aid in fire control scenarios.
