Module 20: Fire Behaviour and Suppression (Optional)
Outcome
Explore the
relationship between
fire behaviour and the
selection and use of
fire suppression
techniques.
Indicators
(a) | Research deployment techniques used for a variety of extinguishing agents. |
(b) | Discuss the relationship between fuel type and the quantity and types of extinguishing agents available. |
(c) | Identify factors that impact the speed of fire development, such as the characteristics of fuel involved and ventilation. |
(d) | Describe the information contained within a pre-incident plan that assists firefighters in determining appropriate firefighting attack techniques on the scene of a building/structure fire within the community. |
(e) | Assess the availability and distribution of water in the community and surrounding area for the purpose of firefighting (e.g., via water hydrants or tanker trucks). |
(f) | Explain the terms flashover and backdraft. |
(g) | Examine methods to prevent and manage flashover and backdraft. |
(h) | Research the B-SAHF indicators of fire behaviour (i.e., Building, Smoke and Air track, Heat, Flame) that help firefighters locate a fire and respond appropriately. |
