Module 21: Firefighting Apparatuses, Equipment and Tactics (Optional)
Outcome
Investigate various fire apparatuses, equipment and tactics commonly deployed by firefighters.
Indicators
(a) Describe characteristics of, and common uses for, various types of ladders used in firefighting.
(b) Explain circumstances for using a variety of laddering techniques.
(c) Demonstrate the seven basic knots (i.e., overhand safety, clove hitch, half hitch, bowline, figure 8 on a bight, figure 8 follow through, becket-bend, water) commonly used by firefighters.
(d) Describe the firefighting applications for each type of knot.
(e) Explain the proper usage of hand tools (e.g., axes, shovels, fire rakes) for fire-fighting support tasks.
(f) Examine firefighting uses for items commonly found on a fire truck.
(g) Discuss the importance of firefighters’ awareness of the contents and organization of a fire truck.
(h) Discuss factors that help firefighters determine the best way to conduct a forcible entry into a building (e.g., cutting a hole, going through an opening such as a door or window).
(i) Research factors for selecting, placing and handling handlines and master stream appliances for applying water to a fire.
(j) Determine the proper procedure for carrying and rolling a fire hose and for connecting fire hose couplings.
(k) Plan the deployment of a fire attack strategy that includes identification of command and suppression functions of all officers and firefighters involved for various given scenarios.
